VMO-6 was a Marine observation squadron that served with distinction in Korea, where Marine observation aircraft evolved from pure observation into armed reconnaissance and close air support direction. The rocket element in this patch design reflects the transition from unarmed observation to armed observation helicopters that could both spot targets and engage them. VMO-6 helicopters in Korea pioneered the concept of armed helicopter operations that would later define the Vietnam-era gunship mission.
