"Can Do" — VMO-1's motto and the spirit of Marine observation aviation.
VMO-1 was a Marine observation squadron that provided visual reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and forward air control for Marine ground forces. This patch is a faithful remake of the 1966 design, capturing the VMO-1 identity during the Vietnam War era when Marine observation squadrons flew OV-10A Broncos and UH-1E Hueys over the jungles and rice paddies of South Vietnam. VMO-1's observers and forward air controllers flew low and slow over enemy territory, directing artillery fire and close air support strikes onto enemy positions while exposed to intense ground fire.
