Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163 (HMM-163), the Ridge Runners, holds a distinguished place in Marine aviation history, particularly for their service during the Vietnam War flying the UH-34D Seahorse. The Ridge Runners earned their name by flying low through the ridgelines of Vietnam's mountainous terrain to insert and extract Marines in contested landing zones. HMM-163 later transitioned to the CH-46 Sea Knight and eventually evolved into VMM-163 with the MV-22B Osprey. This shoulder patch honors the original Ridge Runner identity from the Vietnam era.
