Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 (MWSS-271), the "Gruesome Threesome," is a United States Marine Corps aviation ground support squadron providing the critical expeditionary airfield services and support that Marine aircraft need to operate in combat environments. Based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, and assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) under the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, MWSS-271 Marines are the backbone of forward airfield operations, delivering everything from runway construction and repair to aircraft rescue and firefighting.
The "Gruesome Threesome" nickname speaks to the no-nonsense, hard-charging nature of the Marines who serve in wing support. Their job is unglamorous but absolutely essential — without MWSS Marines, there are no fuel systems, no crash response capability, no airfield lighting, no expeditionary communication networks, and no base defense at forward sites. MWSS-271 has deployed in support of major operations worldwide, building and sustaining the airfields from which Marine tactical aircraft project combat power. The squadron's diverse skillset makes it one of the most versatile units in the Marine Corps.
