The CH-53 Sea Stallion / Super Stallion — The Marine Corps' Heavy Lift Workhorse

The Sikorsky CH-53 is the backbone of Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopter operations, a family of aircraft that has served the Corps for nearly six decades. From the original CH-53A Sea Stallion that first arrived in Vietnam in January 1967 to the three-engine CH-53E Super Stallion that entered service in 1981, and now the advanced CH-53K King Stallion entering the fleet, the CH-53 has been the aircraft Marines depend on when nothing else can do the job.

Developed in response to a 1962 Marine Corps requirement for a heavy transport helicopter to replace the aging CH-37 Mojave, the CH-53A proved its worth immediately in Vietnam, recovering more downed aircraft than any other platform and performing critical troop lifts, resupply, and CASEVAC missions. Both the CH-53A and CH-53D variants played pivotal roles in the final chapter of the Vietnam War, conducting evacuations during Operation Frequent Wind. The CH-53E Super Stallion, with its third engine, seven-blade main rotor, and dramatically increased lift capacity of up to 16 tons externally, expanded the platform's capabilities immensely.

In November 2001, CH-53E Super Stallions conducted what was then the longest amphibious raid in Marine Corps history, flying Marines over 400 miles from ships in the Arabian Sea to seize Camp Rhino near Kandahar during the opening phase of the war in Afghanistan. Super Stallions were again critical during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, moving supplies and ammunition to forward Marine units and assisting in the rescue of Army Private Jessica Lynch. The CH-53K King Stallion, with new engines, composite rotor blades, and a wider cabin, is now entering service to carry the heavy-lift mission into the future.

Perfect For: CH-53 aircrews and maintainers, Marines from HMH squadrons, heavy-lift helicopter enthusiasts, USMC aviation mechanics, and collectors of iconic Marine Corps aircraft insignia.

This PVC patch pays tribute to the mighty CH-53—the Marine Corps' indispensable heavy lifter from the rice paddies of Vietnam to the mountains of Afghanistan and beyond.
