Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), the "Magicians," is the aviation logistics and maintenance support squadron that provides intermediate-level maintenance, supply, and logistics support to the aircraft squadrons of their parent Marine Aircraft Group. This particular patch commemorates MALS-39's legacy with the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight — the tandem-rotor medium-lift helicopter affectionately known as the "Phrog" that served as the Marine Corps' primary troop transport helicopter for over four decades.
The CH-46 Sea Knight was the workhorse of Marine medium helicopter aviation from the 1960s through its retirement in the 2010s, when it was replaced by the MV-22B Osprey. The Phrog could carry up to 17 combat-loaded Marines or 4,000 pounds of external cargo, and its reliability, simplicity, and ruggedness made it beloved by the Marines who flew in it and maintained it. MALS-39's maintainers were the unsung heroes who kept the aging CH-46 fleet airworthy long past its original service life — a feat of maintenance "magic" that earned the squadron its Magicians reputation.
