HMR(L)-263 — the light helicopter transport squadron from Marine Corps aviation's early rotary-wing era.
HMR(L)-263 was a Marine helicopter transport squadron (light) designation from the 1950s-1960s era when the Marine Corps was organizing its helicopter fleet into light and medium transport categories. The "(L)" designation indicated the squadron operated lighter utility and observation helicopters, as opposed to the medium transport HMR squadrons operating the larger HRS and later CH-34 Choctaw helicopters. HMR(L)-263 eventually evolved into the squadron lineages that became today's modern Marine light attack and utility helicopter squadrons.
