During the 1950s and early 1960s, HMR squadrons were developing the doctrine, tactics, and operational concepts for helicopter-borne assault that would become the foundation of Marine aviation's identity. HMR-162 contributed to the pioneering work that transformed the Marine Corps from a force that arrived by sea to one that could arrive by air.
