USMC HMM-361 Flying Tigers Patch — USMC Embroidered Patch
Flying Tigers — Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361
From the atomic test exercises of the 1950s to the jungles of Vietnam and the deserts of the Persian Gulf, the Flying Tigers of HMM-361 — now HMH-361 — have been lifting Marines into the fight for over seven decades. This patch represents one of the most storied helicopter squadrons in Marine Corps aviation history.
HMH-361 was commissioned as Marine Transport Squadron 361 (HMR-361) on February 25, 1952, at Marine Corps Air Station Santa Ana, California, with just three OY-2 and one HRS-2 helicopter. The squadron's first major operation was support for the Desert Rock atomic test exercise in Nevada — still the largest helicopter operation in history. Redesignated HMM-361, the Flying Tigers deployed to Da Nang in 1963 as one of the first helicopter squadrons in Vietnam, and returned for two full combat tours, flying over 31,000 sorties and performing 2,312 MEDEVACs during one seven-month deployment alone. The squadron transitioned to CH-53D Sea Stallions in 1977, then CH-53E Super Stallions in 1990, deploying in support of Desert Storm, Somalia, Afghanistan, and becoming the first CH-53E composite squadron in MEU history.
Perfect For: HMM-361/HMH-361 Flying Tigers veterans, CH-46 and CH-53 crew members, Vietnam War helicopter veterans, and anyone who has served with MAG-16 or 3rd MAW.
Flying Tigers — seventy years of lifting Marines into the fight.
