HMM-266 was based at MCAS New River, North Carolina, operating the Boeing Vertol CH-46E Sea Knight — the beloved "Phrog" that served as the Marine Corps' medium-lift assault transport helicopter for over four decades. The Fighting Griffins conducted assault transport missions, carrying Marines into combat zones and supporting humanitarian operations around the world. The transition from HMM to VMM marked the end of the CH-46 era and the beginning of the MV-22 Osprey future, but the Fighting Griffins' identity and legacy carried forward.
