HMM-266 "Griffins" was a Marine medium helicopter squadron operating the CH-46E Sea Knight from MCAS New River, North Carolina, under MAG-26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The Griffin — a mythological creature combining the eagle and the lion — served as the squadron's mascot, symbolizing the airborne power and ground-force courage that defined Marine helicopter operations. HMM-266 deployed aboard amphibious ships and to forward operating locations before transitioning to the MV-22B Osprey and redesignating as VMM-266.
