HMM-161 "Greyhawks" deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006, flying the CH-46E Sea Knight in one of the most demanding combat environments of the Iraq War. By 2006, Marine helicopter squadrons in Iraq were flying daily combat missions including troop insertion, casualty evacuation, resupply, and command and control in Al Anbar Province. The Greyhawks' OIF 2006 deployment patch commemorates the squadron's service during a critical phase of the war.
