The Greyhawks — one of the Marine Corps' original medium helicopter squadrons, in their CH-46 configuration.
HMM-161 "Greyhawks" was commissioned on January 15, 1951, as one of the first helicopter transport squadrons in the Marine Corps. The Greyhawks pioneered the vertical envelopment doctrine that became the foundation of Marine amphibious assault, flying HUS-1 Seahorses and later CH-46 Sea Knights across decades of combat and peacetime operations. HMM-161 deployed to Vietnam, Desert Storm, Somalia, and the Global War on Terror before transitioning to the MV-22B Osprey and redesignating as VMM-161.
