HMLA-773 "Red Dogs" deployed to Iraq as a mobilized Marine Corps Reserve light attack helicopter squadron, flying AH-1 Cobras and UH-1 Hueys in support of combat operations. This Iraq deployment patch variant commemorates the Red Dogs' service in the combat zone, where Reserve Marines proved they could operate at the same level as active duty light attack crews. HMLA-773's Iraq deployments demonstrated the critical value of the Marine Reserve aviation force in sustaining combat operations during the Global War on Terror.
