Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 (HMLA-773), the "Red Dogs," is a USMC Reserve light attack helicopter squadron with Detachment A (Det A) representing one of the squadron's geographically dispersed detachments. HMLA-773 operates the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom (and previously the AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1N Huey), providing the Marine Corps Reserve with light attack and utility helicopter capability. The squadron's motto — "Fit Via Vi" (Strength Through Force) — captures the aggressive spirit of the light attack mission.
HMLA-773 is notable as one of the few reserve HMLA squadrons in the Marine Corps, maintaining combat-ready crews and aircraft that can be mobilized to augment active-duty squadrons in times of national emergency. Det A's Marines train regularly in close air support, armed escort, armed reconnaissance, and casualty evacuation missions, maintaining the same tactical proficiency as their active-duty counterparts despite the challenges of reserve service.
