HMLA-773, the "Red Dogs," is the Marine Corps' only reserve light attack helicopter squadron, flying AH-1Z Vipers and UH-1Y Venoms under MAG-49 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. Detachment Alpha operates from NAS Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, Louisiana, maintaining one-third of the squadron's assets while the headquarters element is based at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Red Dogs were the first reserve helicopter squadron activated for Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990, deployed to Afghanistan for 18 months of continuous combat operations, responded to Hurricane Katrina as one of the first military units on scene, and were featured in the documentary "Task Force Red Dog."
