The squadron's Latin motto, "Orderint Dum Metuant"—"Let Them Hate, So Long As They Fear"—is attributed to the Roman dramatist Lucius Accius and was famously quoted by the Emperor Caligula. In the context of a Marine attack helicopter squadron, the motto captures the psychological impact of the light/attack team on the battlefield: the AH-1Z Viper's arrival overhead is both a source of terror for the enemy and a source of immense relief for Marines on the ground.
