The H-1 Upgrade program gave the Marine Corps its most capable light attack and utility helicopter team — the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom. This patch marks one of the most significant modernization programs in Marine aviation history, transforming legacy Cobra and Huey platforms into 21st-century combat systems while maintaining the operational DNA that made them legends.
The H-1 Upgrade program was the Marine Corps' answer to the challenge of replacing aging AH-1W Super Cobras and UH-1N Twin Hueys with modern, interoperable platforms. The result was the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom — two helicopters that share 84 percent commonality in components, dramatically reducing the logistics footprint for Marine Light Attack Helicopter squadrons. The AH-1Z brought a four-blade bearingless rotor system, integrated helmet-mounted sight, and the Target Sight System for precision weapons delivery. The UH-1Y added a four-blade rotor, glass cockpit, and dramatically improved range and payload over its predecessor. Together, they form the Marine Corps' light attack and utility helicopter team, operating from austere bases and amphibious ships worldwide.
