CH-53 Heavy Lift PVC Shoulder Patch
Sikorsky CH-53 Super Stallion Heavy Lift Helicopter
The CH-53 Super Stallion stands as the largest and most powerful helicopter in the United States military inventory, serving as the backbone of Marine Corps heavy-lift operations for over five decades. The CH-53 family traces its origins to the CH-53A Sea Stallion, which first flew on 14 October 1964 and entered Marine Corps service in 1966, providing heavy-lift capability during the Vietnam War. The current variant, the CH-53E Super Stallion, entered service in 1981 as a three-engine evolution capable of lifting 36,000 pounds of external cargo—more than any other helicopter in the Western world.
The CH-53E has been the workhorse of Marine Expeditionary Forces across every major operation since its introduction. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, CH-53Es recovered downed aircraft, conducted the first Night Vision Goggle troop insertions, and provided critical heavy-lift support from port facilities to staging areas. In Afghanistan, CH-53E squadrons flew thousands of combat hours in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Moshtarak—the largest helicopter-borne raid of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Super Stallion's ability to lift artillery pieces, light armored vehicles, and downed aircraft makes it irreplaceable in the Marine Corps' expeditionary warfare concept.
The newest member of the family, the CH-53K King Stallion, began replacing the CH-53E with triple the external lift capacity and modernized digital fly-by-wire flight controls. Whether moving M777 howitzers to remote fire bases, recovering downed aircraft under fire, or delivering humanitarian supplies after natural disasters, the CH-53 community represents some of the most skilled and dedicated aviators in military service.
Perfect For: CH-53E Super Stallion and CH-53K King Stallion crew members and veterans, Marine heavy helicopter squadron personnel, HMH squadron members, heavy-lift aviation enthusiasts, and supporters of Marine Corps expeditionary heavy-lift capability.
