CH-53 Heavy Lift Helicopter Patch
Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion / Super Stallion / King Stallion — The Marine Corps' Premier Heavy-Lift Helicopter Family
The CH-53 family represents over six decades of unmatched heavy-lift capability for the United States Marine Corps. Born from a 1962 Marine Corps requirement to replace the aging CH-37 Mojave, Sikorsky's S-65 design was selected over Boeing Vertol's modified Chinook, and the prototype YCH-53A performed its maiden flight on 14 October 1964. Production deliveries began on 12 September 1966, and the CH-53A Sea Stallion was immediately deployed to Vietnam, where it proved invaluable for moving heavy payloads and recovering damaged aircraft in the tropical combat environment.
The CH-53E Super Stallion, developed in the 1970s with a third engine and seven-bladed main rotor, entered service in February 1981 and became one of the largest military helicopters in Western service. Capable of carrying a 26,000-pound Light Armored Vehicle, transporting 16 tons of cargo 50 miles and back, or lifting every aircraft in the Marine inventory except the KC-130, the Super Stallion saw its first shipboard deployment in 1983 aboard USS Iwo Jima. The aircraft has been deployed to Beirut, Somalia, the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The next-generation CH-53K King Stallion, the largest and heaviest helicopter in the U.S. military, took its first flight on 27 October 2015 and was delivered to the Marine Corps on 16 May 2018, achieving initial operational capability on 22 April 2022.
Perfect For: Marine heavy helicopter squadron veterans, CH-53 crew chiefs and pilots, HMH squadron personnel, Marine aviation maintenance professionals, heavy-lift helicopter enthusiasts, and anyone who has served with the Sea Stallion, Super Stallion, or King Stallion platforms.
This patch celebrates the enduring legacy of the CH-53 family — the backbone of Marine Corps heavy-lift operations for over half a century and the aircraft that ensures Marines always have what they need, wherever they need it.
