The CH-46 Sea Knight — affectionately known as the "Phrog" — was the United States Marine Corps' medium-lift assault helicopter for over half a century. This patch celebrates the iconic tandem-rotor helicopter that served Marines from the jungles of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, earning a place in Marine aviation history that no other aircraft can match. The Phrog was retired from Marine service in 2015, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of every Marine who flew in, maintained, or was carried by this legendary helicopter.
The CH-46 first entered Marine service in 1964 and quickly became the workhorse of Marine helicopter operations. Its distinctive tandem-rotor configuration, rear loading ramp, and ability to carry up to 25 combat-equipped Marines made it the backbone of Marine assault support for five decades. From the hot LZs of Vietnam to the humanitarian missions of the 1990s to the combat operations of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Phrog did it all. Generations of Marine pilots earned their wings in the CH-46, and the aircraft's crews developed a fierce loyalty to their beloved Phrog that continues long after retirement.
