MALS-49 "Magicians" is Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49 — a reserve aviation logistics unit under MAG-49 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. Based at MCAS New River, North Carolina, with detachments at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, NJ and NAS JRB New Orleans, LA, MALS-49 is the only MALS in 4th MAW with an active-duty core of maintenance and aviation supply personnel. That hybrid structure makes them unique in the Reserve — able to provide intermediate-level maintenance, supply chain management, and ordnance support to five flying squadrons across three different sites. Originally activated in 1969 at NAS Brooklyn as H&MS-49, the Magicians have supported operations from Desert Storm to Iraqi Freedom, making aircraft mission-capable when everyone else said it couldn't be done. This glow-in-the-dark PVC patch captures their magical reputation.
