US Navy Foreign Area Officer PVC Patch — PVC Patch
Strategic Scouts — U.S. Navy Foreign Area Officers
In a world where alliances are forged not just on the battlefield but in embassy corridors, university lecture halls, and foreign capitals, U.S. Navy Foreign Area Officers serve as the service's most forward-deployed diplomats in uniform. This patch represents the FAO community — commissioned officers who combine strategic focus with deep regional expertise, cultural awareness, and foreign language fluency to advance American interests across the globe.
The Navy's Foreign Area Officer program was formally established in 2006, building on decades of ad hoc regional expertise scattered across the fleet. FAOs undergo an intensive 3-to-5-year training pipeline that includes graduate study at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, language training at the Defense Language Institute, and extended in-country immersion in their assigned region. Prepositioned in over 72 countries worldwide, Navy FAOs serve as defense attachés, security assistance officers, and political-military planners at embassies, Unified Combatant Commands, and Joint Staff assignments — making them the Navy's most expeditionary community.
Perfect For: Navy Foreign Area Officers past and present, defense attaché veterans, Naval Postgraduate School alumni, security cooperation professionals, and anyone who has served the Navy's mission of strengthening alliances and partnerships abroad.
As far as the mission requires — Navy FAOs lead the way.
