Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 21, the Blackjacks, was established on 1 October 1977 as HC-11 Gunbearers at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California, built to provide logistics support across the United States Pacific Fleet. Redesignated HSC-21 in April 2005, the squadron flies the MH-60S Seahawk and operates five expeditionary detachments that deploy aboard Combat Logistics Force support ships, hospital ships, and amphibious assault ships. The Blackjacks have answered the call from vertical replenishment missions keeping deployed strike groups armed and supplied, to medevac operations supporting sailors and Marines in harm's way, including a shore-based detachment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
