HSM-49 Detachment 3 (HSM-49.3), the Untouchables, deployed aboard USS Makin Island (LHD-8) as part of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 49, the Scorpions. Operating the SH-60 Seahawk, this detachment provided anti-submarine warfare, surface surveillance, and search and rescue capabilities from the deck of the amphibious assault ship. Deploying aboard an LHD offers a unique operational experience compared to destroyer detachments — the larger ship carries a Marine Expeditionary Unit, making the helicopter detachment part of a much larger amphibious force. The Untouchables' name reflects their commitment to flawless execution in every mission.
