Officially Licensed US Navy VS-38 Red Griffins Patch — Air Antisubmarine Squadron 38 Embroidered Patch
The Red Griffins — Cold War sub hunters who tracked Soviet submarines from carrier decks across the Pacific.
Air Antisubmarine Squadron 38 (VS-38), the "Red Griffins," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based antisubmarine warfare squadron that conducted ASW, surface surveillance, and sea control missions from aircraft carriers throughout the Cold War and beyond. VS-38 operated the S-3 Viking — the Navy's carrier-based ASW jet — hunting submarines, conducting surface surveillance, and providing over-the-horizon targeting for the carrier battle group. The Red Griffins deployed with Pacific Fleet carrier air wings, flying from the decks of aircraft carriers across the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and beyond.
The S-3 Viking community represented the carrier battle group's primary organic ASW capability, combining sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection, and forward-looking infrared sensors to find and track enemy submarines operating in the fleet's path. VS-38 and its sister sea control squadrons were the carrier's first line of defense against the submarine threat — a mission that required long hours of patient, methodical patrol flying interspersed with moments of intense tactical prosecution. The Red Griffins were disestablished as part of the drawdown of the S-3 Viking community, but their legacy lives on among the veterans who flew the "Hoover" in defense of the fleet.
Perfect For:
VS-38 Red Griffins veterans, S-3 Viking aircrew, carrier-based ASW community members, Pacific Fleet carrier air wing alumni, and US Navy sea control squadron patch collectors.
