Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 21 (VR-21) was a U.S. Navy fleet logistics support squadron that provided airlift and tactical support for Pacific Fleet operations. VR-21 flew cargo, personnel, and priority supplies across the vast Pacific theater, ensuring that fleet units received the critical materials they needed to maintain combat readiness. Fleet logistics squadrons are the unsung heroes of naval aviation — the crews who fly the supply runs, personnel transfers, and priority cargo missions that keep the fighting forces operational.
VR-21's mission demanded long over-water flights across the Pacific, navigating from mainland bases to forward operating locations in Japan, the Philippines, Guam, and beyond. The squadron's crews flew in all weather conditions, day and night, to ensure that time-critical cargo reached its destination. While fleet logistics lacks the glamour of fighter combat or patrol aviation, the mission is every bit as essential — without the parts, personnel, and supplies that VR squadrons deliver, the fleet's aircraft don't fly and its ships don't sail. VR-21 represented the best of the naval aviation logistics tradition.
