Fighter Squadron 24 (VF-24), the "Fighting Renegades," was a U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat fighter squadron that deployed with Pacific Fleet carrier air wings from NAS Miramar, California. VF-24 flew the F-14A Tomcat in the fleet air defense and air superiority role, providing the long-range interceptor capability that protected the carrier battle group against enemy aircraft and cruise missiles. The Fighting Renegades were part of the legendary "Fightertown USA" community at Miramar, where the Navy's Tomcat squadrons trained and deployed during the golden age of fleet air defense.
VF-24 deployed aboard aircraft carriers to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and beyond, maintaining the air superiority umbrella that allowed the fleet to operate in contested waters. The F-14's variable-geometry swing wings, powerful TF30 engines, and AWG-9 weapons system gave VF-24 the ability to detect and engage multiple targets at ranges exceeding 100 nautical miles with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile. The Fighting Renegades were disestablished as part of the drawdown of Tomcat squadrons, but the squadron's legacy lives on among the F-14 community and the pilots who flew from the Renegade ready room.
