Officially Licensed US Navy VF-102 Diamondbacks Patch — Fighter Squadron 102 F-14 Tomcat Embroidered Patch
The Diamondbacks — Atlantic Fleet Tomcat warriors who brought air superiority to every carrier deck they flew from.
Fighter Squadron 102 (VF-102), the "Diamondbacks," was one of the U.S. Navy's premier F-14 Tomcat fighter squadrons, deploying with Atlantic Fleet carrier air wings from NAS Oceana, Virginia. VF-102 flew the F-14 Tomcat in the fleet air defense and air superiority mission, standing ready to intercept enemy aircraft and defend the carrier battle group against air attack. The Diamondbacks' F-14s carried the AIM-54 Phoenix missile — the longest-range air-to-air missile in the Western arsenal — giving VF-102 the ability to engage hostile aircraft at distances exceeding 100 nautical miles.
The Diamondbacks deployed aboard multiple aircraft carriers during the Cold War and post-Cold War eras, participating in Mediterranean cruises, power projection operations, and combat deployments. VF-102 was part of the Tomcat community that defined Navy fighter aviation for three decades — the era of swing-wing interceptors, long-range Phoenix shots, and the air-to-air culture that produced some of the finest fighter pilots in naval aviation history. The squadron transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet and redesignated as VFA-102, continuing the Diamondback legacy in the multirole fighter era.
