The EA-18G Growler is the United States Navy's airborne electronic attack platform, a variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet modified to carry the AN/ALQ-99 tactical jamming system and, more recently, the revolutionary AN/ALQ-249 Next Generation Jammer. Flying from NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, Growler squadrons in the VAQ community are responsible for suppressing and destroying enemy air defenses (SEAD/DEAD), jamming hostile radar and communications, and providing electronic protection for carrier strike groups and joint force operations. The Growler's MRAD (Mid-Range Air Defense) role represents the aircraft's expanding mission set — not just jamming but actively engaging threats with AGM-88 HARM missiles and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, making it both a jammer and a fighter.
