Sea Control Squadron 33 (VS-33), the "Screwbirds," was one of the United States Navy's carrier-based anti-submarine warfare (ASW) squadrons, flying the S-3 Viking from aircraft carrier flight decks across the world's oceans. The Screwbirds were responsible for detecting, tracking, and neutralizing enemy submarine threats to the carrier battle group, using the Viking's advanced sensor suite — including sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detectors, electronic surveillance measures, and forward-looking infrared systems — to maintain control of the undersea domain.
VS-33 operated during the Cold War and post-Cold War era, when the submarine threat from the Soviet Union and later from other nations demanded constant vigilance from carrier-based ASW squadrons.
