Patrol Squadron Ninety (VP-90) "Lions" was a United States Navy Reserve maritime patrol squadron that operated the P-3 Orion, providing a critical augmentation capability to the active-duty patrol force. The Lions maintained a cadre of experienced P-3 crews who could be activated to reinforce the Navy's anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance mission whenever the need arose.
As a Reserve patrol squadron, VP-90's aircrew members balanced civilian careers with the demanding requirements of maintaining proficiency in the P-3 Orion and its complex mission systems. The Lions flew the same long-range maritime patrol missions as their active-duty counterparts, hunting submarines with sonobuoys and MAD equipment, tracking surface vessels, and gathering intelligence across vast stretches of ocean. Reserve patrol squadrons like VP-90 were essential to the Navy's Cold War strategy, providing the additional surveillance capacity needed to track the Soviet submarine fleet across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
