Patrol Squadron 48 (VP-48), the "Pelicans," was a U.S. Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The Pelicans conducted anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and maritime domain awareness missions from land bases around the world, contributing to the Navy's global effort to monitor the seas and track potential threats.
The P-3 Orion that VP-48 operated was the Navy's workhorse maritime patrol aircraft for decades, equipped with sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection (MAD), radar, and a weapons suite including torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. VP-48's crews flew missions lasting 10 or more hours, methodically searching thousands of square miles of ocean for submarine contacts. The patience and endurance required for the maritime patrol mission made VP-48's aviators some of the most dedicated professionals in naval aviation.
VP-48 served during the Cold War when the Soviet submarine fleet posed one of the greatest threats to American and allied security. The Pelicans' work tracking Soviet submarines in the Atlantic, Pacific, and other theaters was a critical contribution to maintaining the undersea balance of power.
