Fighter Squadron 154 (VF-154), the "Black Knights," was one of the most distinguished fighter squadrons in U.S. Navy history, flying carrier-based air superiority missions from the skies over Vietnam through the end of the Cold War and beyond. VF-154 operated a succession of iconic Navy fighters including the F-8 Crusader and F-14 Tomcat, deploying with Pacific Fleet carrier air wings aboard some of the Navy's most storied aircraft carriers.
The Black Knights earned their combat reputation during the Vietnam War, flying missions from Yankee Station into the most heavily defended airspace in the world. VF-154 continued to serve through the Cold War and post-Cold War eras, transitioning to the F-14 Tomcat — the legendary swing-wing interceptor that became the symbol of Navy fighter aviation. The squadron was the last Pacific Fleet Tomcat squadron before transitioning to the F/A-18F Super Hornet and redesignating as VFA-154. This patch represents VF-154 in its fighter squadron era — the pure air-to-air days of the Black Knights.
