Attack Squadron 72 (VA-72), the "Blue Hawks," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that flew strike and close air support missions from aircraft carrier flight decks during the Cold War and beyond. VA-72 operated a succession of attack aircraft and deployed with Atlantic Fleet carrier air wings, delivering conventional ordnance with the precision and aggressiveness that defined the Navy's attack aviation community.
The Blue Hawks were part of the vast carrier-based attack community that provided the fleet with its offensive strike capability. VA-72's pilots trained relentlessly in dive bombing, weapons delivery, and tactical navigation, maintaining the readiness to launch from a carrier deck and put ordnance on target anywhere in the world.
