VA-44 served as a fleet replacement and training squadron, preparing new pilots for the demands of carrier-based attack aviation before they reported to fleet squadrons. The Hornets trained generations of Navy attack pilots in the art of dive bombing, weapons delivery, carrier landing, and the precision strike tactics that defined the attack aviation community.
As a training squadron operating the A-4 Skyhawk, VA-44 played a critical role in maintaining the pipeline of qualified attack aviators that the fleet needed to keep carrier air wings at full strength. The Skyhawk's forgiving handling characteristics and honest flight qualities made it an ideal training platform, while its combat capability ensured that pilots who graduated from VA-44 were ready for the real thing.
