Officially Licensed US Navy RVAH-5 Savage Sons Squadron Patch — Reconnaissance Attack Squadron 5 Embroidered Patch
The Savage Sons — Cold War reconnaissance warriors who flew the RA-5C Vigilante into the most heavily defended airspace on earth.
Reconnaissance Attack Squadron 5 (RVAH-5), the "Savage Sons," was one of the U.S. Navy's elite carrier-based reconnaissance squadrons, flying the North American RA-5C Vigilante — the fastest and most sophisticated reconnaissance aircraft ever to operate from an aircraft carrier deck. RVAH-5 conducted photo and electronic reconnaissance missions over heavily defended enemy territory, providing the fleet and national intelligence agencies with critical imagery and signals intelligence during the Vietnam War and the Cold War.
The RA-5C Vigilante was originally designed as a supersonic nuclear bomber (the A-5), but was repurposed into the Navy's premier carrier-based reconnaissance platform. Flying at speeds exceeding Mach 2 and carrying an advanced integrated sensor package, the Vigilante crews of RVAH-5 flew directly over the most heavily defended targets in North Vietnam — Hanoi, Haiphong, and the rail lines to China — at low altitude and high speed, bringing back the imagery that strike planners needed to hit their targets. The Savage Sons paid a heavy price for their mission, suffering significant losses over North Vietnam. RVAH-5 was disestablished following the retirement of the RA-5C.
Perfect For:
RVAH-5 Savage Sons veterans, RA-5C Vigilante aircrew, carrier-based reconnaissance community members, Vietnam War naval aviation veterans, and US Navy legacy reconnaissance squadron patch collectors.
