VP-8 has operated the P-3 Orion, the Navy's venerable land-based maritime patrol aircraft that served as the backbone of the maritime patrol force for decades. The P-3's sensor suite — including sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection, radar, and electronic surveillance measures — gave VP-8's crews the tools to detect, classify, and track submarines and surface vessels across vast ocean areas. The Fighting Tigers deployed regularly to forward operating locations worldwide, providing fleet commanders with real-time maritime domain awareness.
