Patrol Squadron 7 (VP-7), the "Black Falcons," was a U.S. Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The "Black Falcons" name perfectly suited a patrol squadron — like falcons striking from high above, VP-7 used altitude, speed, and superior sensors to locate and pounce on submarine contacts hiding beneath the ocean surface.
VP-7 conducted anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and maritime domain awareness operations. The P-3 Orion's ability to deploy sonobuoy patterns, analyze acoustic data, detect magnetic anomalies, and coordinate with surface ships and submarines made VP-7's crews essential contributors to the Navy's undersea warfare advantage.
