Patrol Squadron 66 (VP-66), also known as the "Dicemen," was a U.S. Navy Reserve maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The "Dicemen" nickname reinforces the squadron's dice-themed identity — VP-66's aviators were gamblers in the best sense, willing to take calculated risks and bet on their training and skill when hunting submarines beneath the waves.
VP-66 conducted the full spectrum of maritime patrol operations including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), surveillance, and reconnaissance. The P-3 Orion's sophisticated sensor suite required a crew that could analyze complex data, calculate probabilities, and make tactical decisions under pressure — skills not unlike those of a skilled dice player reading the odds and knowing when to make their move.
