Patrol Squadron 65 (VP-65), the "Tridents," was a U.S. Navy Reserve maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The "Tridents" name perfectly captured the squadron's maritime patrol identity — the trident is the weapon of Poseidon, god of the sea, and VP-65 wielded their P-3 Orions like tridents thrust into the ocean depths to find and track enemy submarines.
VP-65 conducted anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and maritime domain awareness missions. As a Reserve squadron, VP-65's citizen-sailors balanced their civilian careers with the demanding requirements of maintaining tactical proficiency in the complex maritime patrol mission. The P-3 Orion's sophisticated sensor suite — including sonobuoys, radar, MAD, and electronic surveillance systems — required constant training to master.
