Patrol Squadron 48 (VP-48) "Boomers" was a United States Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. The Boomers callsign conveyed the squadron's powerful, impactful presence — whether hunting submarines, conducting maritime surveillance, or supporting fleet operations across the world's oceans.
VP-48's Boomers flew the P-3 Orion on long-range maritime patrol missions that could last ten hours or more, covering vast stretches of ocean searching for enemy submarines, surface vessels, and other threats to the fleet. Maritime patrol was one of the most strategically important missions in naval aviation during the Cold War, as the cat-and-mouse game between NATO patrol aircraft and Soviet submarines played out daily across the Atlantic and Pacific. VP-48's crews operated sophisticated sonobuoy systems, magnetic anomaly detectors, and radar to find and track submarines hiding in the ocean depths. The Boomers' contribution to anti-submarine warfare helped maintain the underwater advantage that was critical to Western deterrence throughout the Cold War.
