Officially Licensed US Navy VP-44 Golden Pelicans Patch — Patrol Squadron 44 Golden Pelicans Embroidered Patch
The Golden Pelicans — VP-44, soaring over the world's oceans with the P-3 Orion, one of the Navy's distinguished maritime patrol squadrons.
Patrol Squadron 44 (VP-44), the "Golden Pelicans," was a U.S. Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The Golden Pelicans conducted the full spectrum of maritime patrol and reconnaissance operations, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and maritime domain awareness missions across the world's oceans.
The P-3 Orion was a four-engine turboprop maritime patrol aircraft derived from the Lockheed L-188 Electra airliner, modified with an extensive sensor suite for detecting and tracking submarines. The P-3 carried sonobuoys, a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) boom, radar, forward-looking infrared (FLIR), and could deploy weapons including the Mk 46 and Mk 50 torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and mines. VP-44's crews flew long-endurance patrols lasting 10 or more hours, methodically searching vast expanses of ocean for the telltale signs of submarine activity.
The Golden Pelicans served during the Cold War, when the Soviet submarine fleet represented one of the gravest threats to American and allied security. VP-44's crews were on the front lines of the undersea war, tracking Soviet submarines as they attempted to deploy into the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Perfect For: VP-44 Golden Pelicans veterans, P-3 Orion community members, Navy maritime patrol aviators, Cold War-era ASW professionals, and Navy heritage squadron patch collectors.
