Patrol Squadron 21 (VP-21), the "Black Jacks," was a U.S. Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the Lockheed P-3 Orion. The "Black Jacks" name draws from the card game blackjack — a game of skill, calculation, and knowing when to play your hand. VP-21 applied those same qualities to the demanding anti-submarine warfare mission, calculating probabilities, analyzing data, and knowing exactly when to commit their tactical resources.
VP-21 conducted anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), and maritime domain awareness operations across the world's oceans. The P-3 Orion's sophisticated sensor suite gave the Black Jacks the tools to detect, classify, track, and if necessary, engage submarine targets. VP-21's crews were trained to operate in the most demanding ASW environments, from the deep waters of the open ocean to the challenging acoustic conditions of shallow littoral waters.
