Patrol Squadron 17 (VP-17), the "White Lightnings," was a U.S. Navy maritime patrol squadron that conducted anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and maritime surveillance missions during the Cold War and beyond. VP-17 operated the P-3 Orion and its predecessors from bases across the Pacific and Atlantic, tracking Soviet submarine movements and maintaining the Navy's undersea warfare advantage during the most dangerous decades of the nuclear age. The White Lightnings were part of the vast patrol aviation community that served as America's first line of defense against the Soviet submarine fleet. VP-17 was disestablished as part of the post-Cold War drawdown of patrol squadrons, but the squadron's legacy lives on among its veterans and the maritime patrol community.
