Official VFA-192 Golden Dragons Christmas Patch — U.S. Navy Strike Fighter Squadron F/A-18 Super Hornet Embroidered Patch

From Hellcats over the Pacific to Hornets over Baghdad, the World Famous Golden Dragons have been spreading holiday cheer and dropping ordnance for eighty years. This Christmas cruise patch marks another deployment away from home.

Strike Fighter Squadron 192 (VFA-192) was established on March 26, 1945, as Fighter Squadron 153 (VF-153) at NAS Atlantic City, flying the F6F Hellcat. After post-war redesignations through VF-15A, VF-151, and finally VF-192 in February 1950, the squadron transitioned to F4U Corsairs and deployed aboard USS Princeton for the Korean War, flying close air support for the 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and striking the Suiho hydroelectric plant on the Yalu River in one of the war’s largest joint air raids. In 1953, the squadron entered the jet age with F9F Panthers, and its pilots participated in the filming of The Bridges at Toko-Ri aboard USS Oriskany — earning the legendary nickname "World Famous Golden Dragons." Redesignated as Attack Squadron 192 (VA-192) in 1956, the Golden Dragons flew A-1 Skyraiders and A-4 Skyhawks through the Vietnam era, earning four consecutive CNO Safety Awards from 1966 to 1969. Becoming VFA-192 in January 1986, the squadron transitioned to the F/A-18A Hornet and joined CVW-5 aboard USS Midway out of Yokosuka, Japan. When Operation Desert Storm launched on January 17, 1991, the Golden Dragons were at the tip of America’s sword, raining HARMs onto Iraqi missile batteries and flying 576 combat sorties over 43 days, dropping more than 730,000 pounds of ordnance. The squadron went on to serve aboard USS Independence and USS Kitty Hawk, supporting Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom from forward-deployed Japan. After transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2014 and returning to NAS Lemoore with CVW-2, the Golden Dragons continue to deploy worldwide. This Christmas patch was created for VFA-192’s 2021 holiday cruise — a tradition for squadrons spending the holidays at sea, far from home.
