VAQ-139, the Cougars, is an Electronic Attack Squadron based at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, currently flying the EA-18G Growler. This throwback shoulder patch hearkens back to the squadron's earlier era, when the Cougars were prowling the skies in the EA-6B Prowler — the four-seat electronic warfare aircraft that defined carrier-based jamming for decades. The throwback design connects today's Growler crews to the legacy of the Prowler pilots and ECMOs who built the Cougars' reputation as one of the Navy's elite electronic attack squadrons. It's a patch that says you know where the Cougars came from, and you respect the heritage.
