VFA-106 "Gladiators" is the U.S. Navy's East Coast F/A-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron, based at NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach. VFA-106 trains all East Coast F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler pilots and weapons systems officers before they report to fleet squadrons. The Key West Detachment operates out of NAS Key West, Florida — home to some of the best air combat maneuvering training ranges in the Navy. The Key West det gives student aviators access to unrestricted over-water training areas where they can push the aircraft and themselves to tactical limits that are impossible to replicate at Oceana. Graduating from the Key West phase means a student is ready for the fleet.
