Training Wing 5 (TW-5) conducts advanced strike fighter training for student naval aviators progressing through the jet training pipeline. The Avon Park Winter Detachment sends TW-5 students and instructors to the Avon Park Air Force Range in central Florida for weapons delivery training and tactical exercises that cannot be conducted at the home field. The "Winter Det" name carries a distinctly tongue-in-cheek tone — while other military units endure brutal winter conditions, TW-5's winter detachment takes place in sunny Florida, a fact that is not lost on the student pilots and instructors who participate.
