Officially Licensed USMC VMF-251 Thunderbolts Patch - Marine Fighter Squadron 251 (VMF-251) Thunderbolts Officially Licensed Embroidered Patch, featuring the historic Custos Caelorum insignia of one of the Marine Corps' most decorated fighter squadrons.

Custos Caelorum — Guardians of the Sky — the motto that has defined Thunderbolts identity from the Pacific to the Persian Gulf and beyond.

The squadron traces its lineage to 1 December 1941, when it was commissioned at Naval Air Station North Island, California as Marine Observation Squadron 251. Flying F4F Wildcats and later F4U Corsairs, the unit fought across Guadalcanal, the Southern Solomons, Santa Cruz, Luzon, and the Philippines before being re-designated VMF-251 in February 1945. In Korea, the squadron flew 310 combat sorties and holds the distinction of having the last Marine aircraft engaged in combat on 27 July 1953. Re-designated VMF-251 again in 1957, the Thunderbolts adopted their iconic insignia — a white cross for purity, a red diamond for courage, and a blue field for loyalty — along with the Custos Caelorum motto. The squadron became the first Marine F-8 Crusader unit to deploy aboard a carrier, setting a Sixth Fleet record of more than 500 flight hours in a single month. Later redesignated VMFA-251, the Thunderbolts flew F-4 Phantoms for 21 years and 85,000 flight hours, transitioned to F/A-18 Hornets, flew the first Marine combat sorties in Europe since World War I over Bosnia in 1994, and supported Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. The squadron deactivated in April 2020 and reactivated in December 2024 at MCAS Cherry Point to fly the F-35C Lightning II.

Perfect For: VMF-251 and VMFA-251 Thunderbolts veterans and alumni, F4U Corsair and F-8 Crusader historians, F-4 Phantom and F/A-18 Hornet enthusiasts, F-35C Lightning II fans, MCAS Beaufort and Cherry Point community members, MAG-31 and 2nd MAW collectors, OEF and OIF Marine aviation veterans, shadow box builders, reunion gift buyers, and anyone assembling a serious Marine fighter squadron patch collection that spans World War II through the fifth-generation era.

Eight decades of thunder, stitched into every thread of the Thunderbolts insignia.
